Brookshire's Classic 5K |
The YMCA Brookshire's Classic 5K was held in Madison on Saturday, November 12. A good number of people came out to participate in this run/walk and one mile fun run. After a few instructions from MTC race director, Jack Ward, we were off. Daniel Simpkins took the early lead and never looked back as he finished first with a blistering time of 15:57. Mike Thrailkill came in second to take the Masters with a time of 17:05, and he was followed by Rob Oates at 17:32. Annalee Pierce was the first female with a good time of 20:17. Dell Hilburn was the Masters winner. Curtis Kynerd and Norma Jean Dotson took the Grand Masters honors. Pine Belt Pacer Larry Sykes was first in the Race Walk. Donna Gonzales was the female winner. Caesar Hamilton and Carolyn Graham were the Masters winners. MTC's Jim Myrick and former English Professor Nancy Dykes were the Grand Masters winners. This was my first MTC event since Katrina, and it was good to visit with old and young friends. Jack, Jim and all of the MTC gang did a great job with the race. The most inspiring person at this race, in my opinion, was Oscar Burris, whom I haven't seen at the races in several years. Oscar is still running well at the young age of 84. After the race we had plenty of food and drink. Thanks to everyone for the hard work that it takes to put on events like this one. See Results
