The 2005 YMCA Winter Classic 10K was held in Ocean Springs on Saturday, January 29, with 136 people completing the 10K and 5 participating in the one-mile run. After a few instructions from Leonard Vergunst, someone gave the signal for us to start. Cameron Vincent and Leonard ran together for almost the entire race, but the forty-nine year old winner of the Mississippi Marathon took over near the end and edged out sixteen year old Cameron by 21 seconds to take the win. Amy Hunt was the female winner. Jennifer Bustin and Timothy McDaniel were the Masters winners. Tony's favorite Gulf Coast runner, Ed Wheeler, and Gail Bishop were the Grand Masters winners. Phillip Wedgeworth was the only local person to travel to Ocean Springs, and he finished sixteenth overall and second in his age group. After the race several people were asking about Jerry Worley and wondering why he didn't come down for the race since he did so well last year. Guy Truett, who recently ran the Dublin (that is in Ireland) Marathon, and Timothy McDaniel seem to be the two major members of the "Jerry Worley" fan club. After the race, we had fruit, biscuits and jelly, coffee, hot chocolate, Gatorade, and water. Possibly the best after race item was the availability of showers for us to use. This is just one of many quality races put on by the Gulf Coast Running Club. Much thanks to everyone who helped. Any organization that can get Bob Clark to work hard enough to be named "Race Worker of the Year" must have good leadership. Results are linked.
