BASF Freedom Run Mile in Baton Rouge

Race Report from the 7/4/06 BASF Freedom Run Mile in Baton Rouge

Okay, so because this was just 1 mile, I wasn't sure who would win, me (Audrey), or Charles.    It was an average steamy day in Baton Rouge.  The race was divided into different heats.  The old people (that's Charles, and okay, me) ran first.  The mile was a straight shot, up a gentle slope, then slightly downhill the rest of the race.  The course was fast!!  I met a really nice girl who was an ultra 50 miler, Boston elite marathoner and knew she was my competition.  (Well and off course Charles)!!   None of us had run just a mile for competition lately, so I was thinking I could break 7:00.  That was our goal.  Anyway, to make a long story short, I ran 6:08, Barb, who won the grand masters ran 6:12, and Charles 6:15.  I beat Charles, however, to his credit, at the last 220 yards, I was coasting and sort of being lazy and I heard him yell "Go Audrey"!  I knew then I had to work a little harder.  After this race, Barb and I decided to run in the open women's "for fun".  We ran 6:45.  I have to tell all of you this, I felt like I was running with Joni.  I can't breathe, and this lady was chatting and encouraging the other runners the whole time!!  While we ran, Charles drank our share of the beer, He said someone had to do it!!. We met the most interesting, inspiring people and  if I ever complain again, slap me.  There was an 80 plus year old man.  A little girl who obviously was undergoing chemo or radiation ran 3 heats and won her age.  Another little girl ran with her walker with her dad!!  All of these people just make me realize how wonderfully blessed I am!!  Anyway,  a good day and a good race, Happy 4th.
