The thirty-fourth annual
Day in the Park Run was held on Saturday, May 6, with over
120 runners, several race walkers, and about 100 one-milers.
After a prayer by Steve Armour and some instructions from
long-time race director Bill McMullan, we were off and
running up and down hills through Laurel's Historic
District. Michael Bell took the early lead and held it for
about a half mile until Mike Thrailkill changed gears and
took over to easily win the race. Mike may be getting older
(42), but he hasn't slowed down any. Amy Benoit, aged 15,
was the female winner. Keith Barrett gave up going to
William Carey to come to Laurel and win the Masters trophy.
Janet Callen was the female Masters winner. Phillip
Wedgeworth and Diane Thames were the Grand Masters Winners.
For the first time, we had a race walk division and Larry
Sykes traveled down from Brandon to win. Nancy Dykes came
over from Wesson to be the female race walk winner. As usual
for this race, we had several families represented with
multiple members. There were Wargels, Martins, Armours,
Trests, Strickers, Hodges, and Wedgeworths. It was also
great to see so many out of towners at the race. We had
people from the Coast, Meridian, Jackson, Brandon,
Philadelphia--just to mention a few places. I apologize
for not having times, but the time keeper malfunctioned.
Thanks to everyone who worked hard to put this race on and
also thanks to everyone who came out and ran and walked.
Mark your calendar for the first Saturday in May next year
and come on back. © Phillip Wedgeworth
