Race Report for the Greek Festival
Olympic 5k and 1 mile fun run in New Orleans.
Talk about your hot and humid race
conditions!! Vicki Copeland, Charles Jackson and me
(Audrey), were glistening with our mile warm up!! The
course was well marked, out and back with mile timers at
the 1 and 2 mile spots. Lots and lots of runners, not
sure exactly how many as it isn't posted yet, however,
in the past we were told several 1000. At the
beginning, Vicki and I had pretty much made up our minds
that there were so many runners that we probably had
little chance of an award. There were no age division
awards and the awards for Masters and Grandmasters
were cash awards. (Usually draws the more "studly"
women runners). Charles was concerned with beating me,
as I owed him for the last beating he gave me.
Charles's race strategy consisted of keeping me in
sight, then sprinting past me, while my strategy was
to put as much distance between Charles and me so he
couldn't sprint past me at the line. Vicki's strategy
was to run her pace and finish around 24
minutes. Charles should have been more concerned with
Vicki as she passed him around 2 miles. He said she was
flirting with some guy and was smiling as she blazed by
him. I almost killed myself the first 2 miles,
attempting to maintain a good distance between me and
Charles. I am going to have to go back to Becky's
Remedial Pacing class 101. I finished with a time of
23:10 and managed to out sprint a gal who I thought
might be around my age. (Okay, I may be a wee bit
competitive). Charles and Vicki actually ended up
tieing with a time of 23:53. The post race party was
great!! The runners were allowed into the festival free
with three free beer coupons. Vicki experienced her
first Gyro and I had a shot of Ouzo (I think that is how
it is spelled). Oh, and guess what? I won the Masters
and Vicki won GrandMasters. We each rec'd a 50 dollar
check. Now how cool is that?? This was a good race and
good time for all. As the Greeks would say, OPA and
Kalinikta!! (What's up, and Good-night!!)
