The annual Biloxi
Mayor's Cup 5K was held on November 11 on a very warm, humid
day with a large group of runners and walkers. After a few
instructions from race director, Leonard Vergunst, the mayor
of Biloxi gave the signal to start the race. Several fast
runners were present for the race, but Cameron Vincent had
little trouble winning with an impressive time of 16.00. The
first female finisher was thirteen year old Hannah Nelson
with a time of 21.32. Leonard Vergunst won the Masters with
a good time of 17.24. Stephanie Weaver was the female
Masters winner. Bill Gasparrini and Lu Jeffery won the Grand
Masters. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented. In
addition to the members who live on the Coast, Keli Garcia,
Mike Boyd, and Phillip Wedgeworth made the journey to the
coast to run and they represented the club well. Keli Garcia
and Mike Boyd placed second and third in their age group,
and Phillip Wedgeworth placed first in his. After the race
we had bananas, oranges, cookies, water, Gator Aide, soft
drinks and beer. One of the best features of this race was a
long sleeve shirt with no advertisements on it. Leonard and
the entire Gulf Coast Running Club did a great job with this
race. Much thanks for all of the hard work.
