The 18th Annual River Region
Health Systems Over the River Run was held in Vicksburg,
MS on a sunny morning with a great crowd of participants
out to enjoy the event, the company, and the after race
party. The weather was ideal initially with a nice
crisp morning (40ºF) but warmed up a little more by the
later finishers. 289 runners and 236 walkers completed
the 5-mile race. In addition, fifty-two kids ran the
1-mile fun run. Thirteen running teams and 20 walking
teams competed in the corporate team competition. The
course took the participants across the historic Old
Mississippi River Bridge. We started in Mississippi
land, quickly visited Louisiana and got some gumbo and
jambalaya, and then, a couple of minutes later, we were
back home in the Magnolia State.
Mark Thorne returned to the
winners rostrum in the MTC Grand Prix series once more,
easily winning the 5-mile men's run with an impressive
time of 26:57 while Heather Butler won the ladies event
for the 1st time in 31:31. The Masters category was led
by Robert Ross (29:38) and Francine Fox (36:39)
while Willie Power (32:14) and Dona Lee Andrew (35:40)
won the Grand Master titles. Louisiana residents Kirby
Hendrix and Angel Wolford were the top walkers with a
time of 47:50 and 49:34 respectively. Pine Belt Pacer
Nestor Raul Anzola (51:04) and Elizabeth Howard got the
Masters trophies while David Smalley (49:30) and Emily
Lee (53:07) were the fastest Grand Masters. Seth
Cantrell (6:20) and Tara Cook (7:05) won the children's
1-mile run.
I am very glad with
everything about this race. First, my final time,
51:04, was six minutes faster than last year (57:18).
My pace in the 5-mile (10:13 per mile) was even faster
than my pace in the 5K races. What about the
awards? They were excellent! In this race runners and
walkers have the same weight and value, so both groups
receive similar distinctions. The overall winners in
both events got a $250 cash prize in addition to their
trophies. What about the Masters and Grand Masters
winners? We received a nice trophy, a coupon for
one-night stay for two in the Ameristar Casino Hotel in
Vicksburg, a dinner for $80.00 in a fancy restaurant,
and in addition, two extra nice gifts all wrapped up.
Well... we couldn't complain about it! Could we?
What else? the weather was
perfect; everybody who registered for the race received
a bag with a nice t-shirt, an insulated cooler bag with
zipper and side pockets, and several other
goodies; there were lots of food, beverages and beer in
the post race party; we had a live band; we could
attend the blues fest, and the organization was A+.
Congratulations and thanks to
Jack Ward, the MTC crew, the race committee, and the
volunteers who made the Eighteen Annual Over the River
Run a very special and successful event. Mark it in
your calendars for next year! I highly recommend it! :)
