HATTIESBURG, MS, May 10, 2006– The mile has long been regarded as the true test of a track athlete’s endurance and speed. On Saturday, May 13, 2006 at the Southern Miss track, over 100 athletes will test their combination of speed and endurance in hopes of winning the title of the "Fastest Miler In Mississippi". The Mississippi Premier Mile Championship and Festival is a salute to the sport of track and its athletes. It begins at 5:00 p.m. with the Kids Mile for boys and girls ages 12 and under. The schedule of events follows with the Open Women Mile (Age 18 and over) at 5:30 p.m., the Open Men Mile (Age 18 and over) at 5:45 p.m., the High School Girls Open Division at 6:00 p.m. and the High School Boys Open Division at 6:15 p.m. The highlight of the meet is the High School Girls and Boys Championship Mile events at 6:30 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. respectively. The boy and girl athletes in the Championship races were individually selected and invited based on their times and performances in the 1600m. event over the past three months. Girls need to have a verifiable 1600m time of 6 minutes or under while the boys need to have a verifiable 1600m time of 4:45 or under. Race Director, Yousri Elmejdoubi sees the event as a chance for the top High School runners to compete against one another. "There are limited opportunities for the High School runners to compete head to head due to different divisions and the separation of the public and private schools. By bringing these runners together, we are sure to witness some fast times, and a close race that several runners could come out as the champion." As for predicted times, Elmejdoubi foresees some Mississippi High School records being broken this weekend. "We have pace-setters for the boys and girls mile. I predict the Championship Boy’s Mile will be won with a time of 4:15 or under, which will be the fastest mile in the state to date. The Championship Girl’s Mile, I think can be won under 5 minutes, which is also the fastest time in the state." The High School Boys Championship Mile race is shaping up to be a very close race where any athlete can take the title. Cameron Sherrill of Meridian enters the race with the fastest time of the 2006 season at 4:29. Following closely behind is Daniel Simpkins of Madison (4:30), Matthew Cameron of Madison (4:32), Rob Ellis of Tupelo and Clayton Walter of Starkville, both with a time of 4:33. The High School Girls Championship Mile features Mississippi Distance superstar, Cory McGEE of Pass Christian, Mississippi. McGEE holds the fastest entering time in the mile with 4:49, a time she received at an Indoor National Meet in New York this past March where she claimed the title of High School Indoor National Champion. Other contenders include Logan Waites of Hattiesburg (5:21), Brittany Griffis of Hattiesburg (5:22), and Krissy Ford of Jackson (5:22). Elmejdoubi would like to thank the following sponsors for making this event possible: Soccer Locker and City Runners, The First National Bank, London and Stetelman Commercial Realtors, Hattiesburg Coca-Cola, Hattiesburg Radiology Group and Healing Touch Massage.
