The first edition
of "The Race is On 5k Run" took place at Temple Baptist
Church on Saturday, October 7. Around 50 runners and
walkers participated in the 1-mile fun run and 44 did in the
5K race. There were great weather conditions for the event,
sunny sky and temperatures in the 60's. The first race, the
1-mile fun run, took place at 8:00am. Anthony Stricker was
the winner followed by his sisters Kayla and Christie.
The 5K race
started at 8:30am after some instruction given by Mr. PBP
President Jim Coll. Michael Wilson took an early lead
followed closely by Nestor Raul Anzola who could not figure
out what was going on. After 300 yards he realized he was
running too fast. John Olivery, Anthony Stricker, Keith
Barrett, and Phillip Wedgeworth easily passed him a couple
of yards later and disappeared in the distance. After 18
minutes the first runner, Michael Wilson, showed up in the
finish line. 200 yards before the end, John, Anthony, and
Keith decided to pass over the cones and take a little
detour around the church. Phillip was ready to follow them,
but Mr. President guided him to the right path right before
he jumped over the cones. He finished in 21:46 and was
followed by the fastest Colombian in Montague Blvd, Steve
Phillips, Charles Jackson, Steve Champine, and the
overall female winner, Audrey Jackson.
The Pine Belt
Pacers were well represented. In addition to Audrey's
victory, Keith won the Masters category, and Phillip and
Becky got the grandmasters titles. Brittany Ware, John
Olivery, Donna Sumrall, and Nestor Raul Anzola placed first
in their age groups. Steve Phillips and Renne' Ford were
second in theirs, and Charlie Jackson placed third in his.
Pacers Dow Ford and Jennifer Ware also had a great run.
After the run, we
enjoyed some fruit, beverages, and lots of door prizes.
Thanks to Jim Coll, Steve Ulery, and the church organizers
and volunteers for the course assistance and a nice and well
organized
