Well as usual, Baton Rouge usually has flat courses.  Charles and I ran this
race last year, and it is one of our favorites.  I beat Charles last year,
but alas, not this year!!  I knew I was in trouble when I heard him
breathing behind me at the 1 mile.  My strategy is to run as hard as I can
and put some distance between us, yet, I ran a slow first mile (that lack of
speed training is hurting me!!) and he ran a fast first mile, (usually he
takes it a lot slower).  He passed me, then I passed him, then he passed me,
etc., etc.,  This is a scenic race around the lake, but I was so caught up
in watching Charles, that I could have been in a train station and not known
the difference.  (I am sick and need help)!  Anyway, he passed me up the
last time around 4.5 miles and I just didn't have what it takes to catch
him.  We figure he beat me about 20 to 30 seconds.  We had chips, however,
there was a malfunction somewhere, and the times were not right.  (no
really, I'm not kidding).  The race director apologized several times,
however there were some race veterans that were not real happy with the
times recorded.  (The times were about 30 seconds to a minute slower than
the actual clock and watch recordings).  This is a great race with good
sponsers, I won my age division and won a Brooks back pack, and if I would
have focused on the gal who passed me around mile four, I would have won a
cash prize for Masters.  This was a personal best for both of us, although I
felt like I should have run better.  You know, this running thing is a
humbling and sometimes frustrating event.  Sometimes, my mind is willing,
but my body is lacking, and sometimes, my body is willing, but my mind is
lacking.  I just wish I could get both mind and body in sync!!  Anyway, I
ran 5 miles at 38:12 and Charles did 37:50.    All in all, a good race.
