Thank you note from USM

The biggest PBP conspiracy in the club history frustrated Nestor Raul Anzola’s hopes of setting the new "Old-Colombian-Living-in-Hattiesburg Record" for the 5K Run for Love. In a cold Saturday morning on February 11, 2006, his dreams of becoming a world well known athlete was blocked by the sinister actions of Don TonyVito Corleone Mozingo and his gang of renegade runners. Before the race Mr. Anzola could feel something estrange was being plotted around him. First, he saw Ms PBP Vice President Dawn Smith and Ms PBP Secretary Dana Christensen giving some fliers to the runners who approached their information table. When Raul Anzola arrived there, they hid all the papers. Then he asked the PBP Club Officers where the race would start. Ms Smith told him it was right behind the USM stadium, close to Hwy 49. Ms Christensen just added he should hurry up in order to arrive in time. When Anzola was running by the Bond Hall building, he noticed everyone else was hanging out close to the Payne Center parking lot, so he had to turn back and rush 300 meters to the real start point before the gun went off. He could see Smith and Christensen giggling behind a bush.

Well, it was time for the race! As planned, he checked where his first race rabbits, Corey Rigdon and Cory McGee, were located. The race began, and he managed to follow the fast young girl with the yellow tank-top for 3 second. Then, he went after Mr. Rigdon for another 2 second. He hung in there and closely followed his third rabbit, Robyn Ryder for another 50 yards! Everything looked fine! However, something happened. He could see TonyVito Corleone in the distance making some gestures to one of the runners behind him. Mr. Anzola looked for the fourth rabbit and could not find anywhere. Suddenly, after passing the Green Coliseum, he felt like a bullet crossing his way. It was Barrett, the fourth rabbit!! The man just stayed behind him all the time and out of the blue, after Corleone Mozingo’s instructions, and running a 4 minutes/mile pace, passed a stunned Mr. Anzola. He tried to chase Barrett but was an impossible mission. He was flying!

What to do? Let’s look for the fifth and sixth rabbits, Dave Beckett and Steve Ullery. They were not anywhere!!! Mozingo had paid Beckett to miss the race and go to check for colonies of Rafinesque’s big-eared bats under concrete bridges in Perry County that morning. Mr. Ullery, who our Colombian friend just saw before the race, had unexpectedly vanished from the land. Nestor Raul started panicking. What about the record? What should he do? Frustrated for what was going on, he kept running all by himself in a slower but steady pace. Surprisingly, after mile and half he saw a familiar face; it was Dr. John Harsh. "What’s up?" – he asked. Mr. Anzola explained the situation about his expected record. Graciously, Dr. Harsh offered his services to help him. "Follow me Raul" – he said – "Let’s kick some butts in the last mile and half", and he speeded up his pace. Anzola, tired and stressed, could hardly go behind Dr. Harsh. After half mile, the veteran runner looked back to Anzola and shouted, "What the heck is going on? You are making me going so slow. Hurry up man!" Anzola could not answer. His feet did not keep the pace. Dr. Harsh yelled: "Sorry my friend. I can not wait for you all day long. I have to work after the race at the USM Psychology Lab. See you at the finish line!" – and then he left.

Our Colombian-record-to-be-holder remembered that still there was a last resource, stick to his friend Vicky Copeland as soon as she passed him as she always used to do. However, it never happened! To his surprise, Mrs. Copeland was part of the complot. Also closely following Corleone Mozingo’s directions, she stayed 50 yards behind Anzola the whole 3.1 miles. What a shame!

But the conspiracy story did not end there. For his misfortune, one hundred-twenty yards before the finish line, Nestor Raul Anzola felt someone strongly pulling his t-shirt from behind. It was Mr. Charles "Al Capone" Jackson, a local runner in his same age category, hired by Mozingo to hold him as the last resource to prevent the Colombian recreational runner to get the world record. From there Al Capone Jackson punched and kicked Anzola continuously. Anzola stroke back, he hit Jackson with his gloves and stuck his fingers in Al Capone’s eyes. It was an outrageous battle to the end; hitting, kicking, screaming at each other back and forth until the last yard. At the end, they finished in a tie for 40th place overall. Then Anzola looked up to the clock for the finish time…. officially, it was 23 minutes and something…and a little bit more! (35 seconds). Unbelievable! He did not get the record. Hurt and furious he looked for the Run for Love official to make a claim. SURPRISE! Who was there to assist him? It was Mr. Ullery, the guy who was supposed to be his rabbit most of the course. Mr. Mozingo ordered him not to run and just look at Mr. Anzola at the finish line. Crying loudly Nestor Raul looked for the Club organizer, Holly and Becky Ryder. He found them right there. However, they told him the president of the South American Chapter of the PBP should fill a written complaint in his name in the next 24 hours and expect an official answer from the Pine Belt Pacers Club in 24… months!!

Disheartened, discouraged, and aggravated for his experience, Mr. Anzola decided to go home. While going back to his car, he could see current PBP president Jim Coll chatting and laughing loud with Tony Corleone Mozingo and Yousri Elmejdouby. Shame on you PBP members! The South American Chapter will not participate in any event organized or supported by the Pine Belt Pacers Club in the next….. 6 days.

The last words from Mr. Anzola before leaving the USM scene were: "I’ll be back!! I’ll break all the record next Saturday, February 25 during the Soccer Locker 5K Challenge. Count on me! Mr. Mozingo you can’t stop me!"   © Pijume Diwesi  See Pictures

The South American Chapter of the Pine Belt Pacers is also looking ahead to participate in the Love for Run 5K at USM.  One of his members, Nestor Raul Anzola, will be trying to break the "Old-Colombian-Living-in-Hattiesburg" record for the race, currently held by 2005 "Colombian-Coach-Potato-Living-In-Forrest-County-Champion", 99 year old Pijume Diwesi.  The current record is 23 minutes and something (or was it 24 minutes?) that was set by him in the first edition of this event a couple of years ago.  Nestor Raul is planning to achieve his goal by setting his pace according to different rabbits he chooses to follow along the course.  Hence, he will closely follow U-Coach runners Corey Rigdon and Cory McGee for the first... 20 yards, then he will stick with Pine Belt Pacer Robin Ryder for the next 50 yards. Once they run away, he will try to closely follow PBP 2005 Grand Prix Champion Keith Barrett for another 100 yards and then stick with Dave Beckett or Steve Ulery at least until reaching the mile one marker. If this strategy does not work out, he will slow his pace and try to glue to 2005 Grand Prix Women's Master Champion Vicky Copeland as soon as she passes him (as she has always done after mile 1.5 in every single race!).  If nothing works fine and he does not succeed in his goal, his final and alternative objective will be trying to set the new "Old-Lazy-Colombian-Living-In-Montague-Avenue-Record" for the distance in the walking category.  Thanks for your support and cheers during the race to our glamorous representative.

Sincerely, N.R.A., President of the PBP South American Chapter
