11th Annual SHAMROCK 5-K

“Fun Run” 2006

The Eleventh Annual Kappa Delta Shamrock 5K Fun Run was conducted on a beautiful, clear spring Saturday morning beginning at the Payne Center in USM on March 11th.  The event attracted more than 100 people of the local running community who ran the course through the campus at Southern Miss.  They were joined by at least 80 happy, young, sunny girls in green t-shirts who were pointing out where to go and cheering everyone up all through the 5K-route.  There were also some folks stationed at the 1.18 marker calling out splits.

The race took off at 8:00 am.  Tony Sanford took an early lead and kept it to the end, finishing the race in just over 17 minutes followed by Pine Belt Pacer Mostafa Khannouchi.  Another Pacer, Rickie Sumrall, was third overall and got the Masters title.  Former Southern Miss cross-country runner Karen Tankersley, who finished in 20:00 minutes, dominated the women’s race.  Pine Belt Pacer Audrey Jackson won the Masters category in 23:13, setting a personal record for the distance.

Since there are no results posted online, I can just tell you how some other people from the PBP Club did.   It was a strong show by the Pacers.  In addition to Mostafa, Rickie, and Audrey’s performance; other members did great.  Thus, Jim Coll, Keith Barrett, Phillip Wedgeworth, Jay, and Jerry Keywood ran pretty well and won their corresponding age group as also did Nadine Archuleta in the women’s race.  Deedre Coll,  Brandy Windham, and Nestor Raul Anzola placed in their age brackets.  Aquilino Garcia ran his first official race as a PB Pacer.

Cash money for the top runners and certificates to restaurants, pictures, and other goodies were given out as awards.  The event was organized by the Kappa Delta Sorority and raised money for Prevent Child Abuse of America and Stop Child Abuse and Neglect.  Of the money raised, a full 80 percent of the proceeds stays in the local community and is donated to local child abuse agencies; the remaining 20 percent is donated to PCA America's national office for its national prevention efforts.  Congratulations to the Kappa Delta girls for a very well organized event.
