The first ever The Bridge 5K Run/Walk and one-mile fun run was sponsored by Broadmoor Baptist Church in Madison on Saturday, September 23 with 140 runners, 63 walkers and 38 one-milers. The race was an out and back with several hills, and the heat and humidity added to the difficulty, but what was most frustrating was the length of the course. It was Long! The best estimate was about 3.4 miles, which is just a little bit more than a standard 5K. After the race most people were complaining about the length and saying that they were anywhere from a minute to two minutes slower than usual. Rob Oates won his third race in three weeks, but he was one minute and ten seconds slower than his usual pace, and a runner like Rob doesn't vary over a minute--especially since he normally does better with hills. Della Hilburn was the female winner. To add to the lack of organization, this race gave a Masters, a Grand Masters, and a Senior Masters, but only one of each, not one male and one female. Most people were very surprised with this fact also. Now that I have made all of the negative statements, I do think that the problems can be taken care of very easily, and this can be a successful race in the future. The workers were friendly and helpful, and with a little work this race can become a premier event. Madison is a great place, and the organizers seem to want to do a good job. Complete Results.
