Race Report from USA Nature Trail Run
in Mobile, AL
October 21, 2006

It was a beautiful day for a race with about 250 participants showing up to
run in the first annual University of South Alabama Nature Trail 5K. Finding
the location on campus proved one of the more difficult parts of the race,
but Pine Belt Pacer Donna Sumrall and family showed up with enough time to
find the ever important restrooms and touch base with family before the race
began.
Official start time for the race was 8:30, and officials gave their last
minute instructions. With a "on your mark, get set, go" start up, the race
was on. Runners made their way toward the wooded area dodging small limbs
and the occasional dip in the ground. Once inside the woods, things got
interesting. Some runners were trying to run side by side making it very
difficult to find a place to pass. Years of 3rd quarter rushing in marching
band proved valuable for those of us who could find a way to weave our way
through the crowd. The trail looped around twice for a rather confusing
course, but the fresh air, beautiful surroundings and thrill of running
overcame any negative thoughts. Volunteers were encouraging as runners made
their way past.
Donna Sumrall's sister said that when the front runner, Samson Kipchirchir,
came past her, it was like watching someone gliding on air. He made the race
seem effortless. Donna never got the opportunity to see the front runner. I
think he ran by so fast he seemed invisible. Either that or she was too busy
trying not to trip over tree roots.
After the race, runners were treated to lots of fruit and beverages and then
everyone met at the student center for a post-race spaghetti brunch
sponsored by Fazzoli's. While Donna did not run fast enough to overcome her
competition, her son Levi did. He finished 3rd in his age group and won ice
cream coupons which were much appreciated. For complete results, you can check out http://www.pcpacers.org/results/06-07/naturetrail.html
This was the first annual race on the nature trail and for a first race, it
was very well organized.
