ACCESS Recreation 5K Run/Walk

Around 65 people gathered in the Southern Miss Gateway to the Longleaf Trace at 9:00am to participate in the first edition of the “ACCESS Recreation 5K Run/Walk” on Saturday, March 31.  Weather conditions were perfect with temperatures in the 60’s, some wind, and cloudy skies.

After some instructions from Dr. Brent Wolf, the gun went off, and two Hispanic guys jumped out into an early lead (some people said they were two elite international runners coming from a fast race somewhere in Sumrall, MS).   They kept the lead for about ¾ of a mile but ran out of gasoline.  Then Donald Coats took the lead, closely followed by Leland Davis and Henry Calamari.  At the turn-around, point Davis and Calamari took over.  At the end Davis beat Calamari to win the race in 20:23.  Third place went to Tim Blom, fourth to Donald Coats, and fifth to Pine Belt Pacer Nestor Raul Anzola.  The women’s category winner was Lindsay Blom who finished six overall a couple of seconds behind Anzola.

In addition to the Fastest Colombian Coach Potato who finished in 21:43, the Pine Belt Pacers were also represented by Kily Marathon-A-Month Garcia who covered the 5K in 22:13 and the PBP Young Runners of the Year, the Gaudet sisters, Cheryl and Rebecca who finished 25th and 26th overall.  Their mom, Pine Belt Pacer Shelia Gaudet was also present but being part of the race organizational team.

The race was very well organized by Alpha Epsilon Delta and the USM Recreation Major’s Association.  All profits from the event go to ACCESS Recreation, an organization within the School of Human Performance and Recreation at Southern Miss whose goal is to provide inclusive recreation programs for the residents in the city of Hattiesburg and the Pine Belt
