Memories
of a hilly race by Audrey Jackson:
The Memorial Day
race in Purvis is in the 18th year and is called the
Campmeeting Cantor to benefit the Salvation Army. As
flat at the Gonzales race was, this one was the hilliest
course I have ever run in a race.
The Pinebelt
Pacers were represented by me, Charles, and Nestor.
Since I didn't have a bike, Nestor took no pity on me
today!! Also, he had something to prove. His status as
the fastest Colombian in Hattiesburg has spread to other
areas in Mississippi. A young man drove down from
Meridian to challenge Nestor. Nestor took off, holding
nothing back that first mile. The young Colombian from
Meridian was up to the challenge. I am pretty sure they
were neck an neck for a while then the young man's youth
worked to his advantage. Nestor was defeated and has
lost his title!! However, he was first in his age group,
and Charles was 2nd. (Charles wasn't motivated today, no
beer anywhere.) Nestor has the full results with names
and times.
A young girl and
her brother (Stacy and Ryan Hagenson) won the race
outright. I was just glad to make it up that last hill
on very tired legs from previous races. This was a very
small race, but this course/race has potential. I feel
like the race was short (Nestor and Charles agree), and
the awards were a little different. (Nestor and I got 2
awards, age group awards, and overall placement awards.
All in all, I think we should consider this one next
year. The cause is good, the race director and
volunteers were very nice. This concludes my racing
spree. My foot is fine, my breathing is getting better
and it's all good. My legs are tired, but have stood up
to the challenge!! I will catch all of you on the run!!
Take care, Audrey

The Cantor 5K is
a great event with a lot of potential. With some little
adjustments, it would be a nice event to be included in
the PBP Grand Prix in the coming years. The organizers
and volunteers are very nice and friendly. The course is
challenging (you never find a flat area.... always going
up and down, up and down...and up, up, up!!!!). The date
is good... there are not other events during the
Memorial Day weekend in the area. In addition, to
include an event that takes place in Purvis would give
us more variety of locations!
