Second Annual Run with the F.O.G 5K |
The fourth race of the Pine Belt Pacers Club Grand Prix calendar, the Run with the F.O.G 5K and 1 Mile Fun Race, was held in Sumrall, Mississippi on Saturday, March 31 2007. We were welcomed by Anita and Richie Sumrall and a group of high-spirited volunteers. An enthusiastic group of runners, a lot of them Pine Belt Pacers, met in Lion’s Club Park early in the morning. There we could see long-time club members such as the veterans Keith Boston Barrett, Steve the Rock Ulery, Vicki Powergirl Copeland, Tony Petrocelli Mozingo, Donna Davis, Jim Puckett, Richie and Anita Sumrall, the Cool Jim Coll, and current PBP President Ms Dawn Hillary Smithlinton. There were some members of the 2006 Pacers Class: Charles and Audrey Jackson, Kily Garcia, Donna Sumrall, Millie Mozingo, John Oliveri, and Andrew Maxwell. The event also counted with the participation of a couple of new Pine Belt Pacers such as Terry Lawhead and Terry Ingram.
The course for the race started and finished at Lion’s Club Park. It was mostly flat with a couple of rolling hills in the first mile. Anita gave us the final instructions, and we were off! PBP Terry Lawhead sped off into the lead and never looked back. He had the men's race well under control, slaughtering the competition with a commanding sub18 minutes finish time. John Oliveri nabbed second place (he did not miss any turn this time J!), and Keith Boston Barrett finished third. Richie Sumrall came in fourth place followed by Nestor Raul Anzola. Local runner Audrey Jackson won the women competition ten seconds ahead of second place finisher, Vicky Copeland.
It was a very positive run for me since I crossed the finish line in 21:27 breaking my PR for the distance once again in 2007. I had to leave early, so I don’t know the final results (someone help me here!). I suspect most of the Pacers placed in their age categories. One of the cool things about the race was that every runner got a door prize. You just finished the 5K and picked yours. I got some sunglasses (by the way, I needed it!). Post-race food consisted of fruit, coke, Gatorade, and other goodies. There was plenty for everyone. The race was organized by the First Baptist Church, Sumrall Youth Group. Pine Belt Pacer Anita Sumrall officiated as Race Director. Thanks to the participants and sponsors, the race proceeds will go to the kids Summer Camp. © Pijume Diwesi
