| CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEWEST ULTRA RUNNERS JOE MILLICHAP
AND DIRK HAYES, ALSO PLACING 1ST AND 2ND RESPECTIVELY!! The start time at 8:00 showed a chilly 44 degrees with a wind-chill of 41. As the time passed, the temps slowly dipped to a bone chilling 39 with the wind-chill sitting on 33 when the runners approached the finish line. Six brave souls toed the line of whom were the Fabulous Four made up of Rick Caffy, Jon Fisher, Rob Apple and Paul Arnette who are also ultra veterans. The President of the Murfreesboro Pacers Running Club, Dirk Hayes, debuted at his own race running his first ultra along with overall winner, Joe Millichap. Competition heated up a bit when 65 year old Joe Millichap saw that he had the lead and could be overall winner and continued to charge ahead. Dirk had been running with the Fabulous Four when he decided to give chase after completing the second loop. The course was run partly on the Greenway and partly on the Battlefield in Murfreesboro. The course consisted of one 11+ mile loop and one 10 mile loop repeated. The aid station was well stocked with homemade energy bars, p&b sandwiches, potato chips, bananas, hot dumplings in chicken broth and various energy drinks and gels. These goodies were donated by the runners. It was said that according to a GPS device, the mileage of the course summed up to 32.5 miles. The participants had so much fun that they did not notice the bonus mileage. Too many folks missed a wonderful time of friendship with a faint smell of competition in the air.
