Polar Bear 5K

I have three grandchildren---Tate and Landry who live here in Hattiesburg
and Bailey who lives in the Atlanta area. I've frequently told them and
their parents that it is my goal that I will continue to run for many more
years. I know that there will probably come a time when I will be too old to
drive, but will probably still be running (or at least I will think I'm
running---putting one foot in front of the other and heading for the finish
line). Anyway, I've told the grandchildren that I hope that they will be
runners and will be able to drive me to races when I reach the point where
it is no longer safe for me to be behind the wheel. (They and their parents
and Hollie may think I've already reached that point).

This weekend I got to participate in a race with my granddaughter. She is 9
years old and has run in three races. This race was the Polar Bear 5K/2K in
the Atlanta, GA area. She ran the 2K in a time of 11:59 which equates to a
9:38 mile pace. There were no awards for the 2K, but all participants got a
ribbon and a nice long-sleeve t-shirt. Bailey was pleased with her time,
improving almost a minute over last year. I ran the 5K and hobbled to the
finish in a time of 26:42  I won the 60-64 AG (ed. note: 2000 entrants), but there was a woman in the 65-69 AG who ran a faster time. On a good day, I can beat her. But, since I foolishly tried lifting too much weight while doing hamstring curls, I've been dealing with more of my chronic hamstring issues. I guess I'll back off for a few weeks and try to heal. © Becky Ryder  See RaceSite
