Run From Drugs 5K
April 28, 2007

The Jones County Parents for Drug Free Youth revived the Run From Drugs 5k race, which was held at the Sawmill Mall for a number of years. This year's race was held at the Howard Industrial Park on Saturday, April 28. The race started at the Jones Junior College Advanced Technology Center and was an out and back course throughout the park. The course was as flat as any that I have ever run, and everyone present seemed to enjoy the race. Since there were several races in the area, all of the fast people went somewhere else. After a few instructions from Jeremy Felder, the race director, we were off and running. Phillip Wedgeworth took the early lead and never gave it up, finishing with a 19.45. Shely Ingwerson traveled all the way from Nebraska to beat out Audrey Jackson and took the first place woman's award with a time of 21.55. Charles and Audrey Jackson made it a family affair, winning the masters awards. Charles ran a 21.30, and Audrey ran a 22.26. Sam Bilbo was third overall and won the under 19 age group with a 21.35. Michael Gordon was the winner in the 20-29 age. Ray Henderson was second overall and won the 30-39 age group with a 21.23. Chuck Gatzman was second in that age group. Nick Haas took the 40-49 age group. Christy Pickering won the 30-39 age group with a 27.27, and Ashley Gatzman was second in that age group. After the race, we had bananas and water. With the flat, fast course, the lack of traffic, and the use of the Advanced Technology building, this race could be developed into a success.
