Run for the Roses April 14, 2007

The 24th edition of the Run for the Roses 5K Run/Walk took place on a very hot and humid Saturday morning.  As the weather forecast did not look so good for the Boston area on Monday, Pine Belt Pacers Steve Ulery, John Oliveri, Becky Ryder, Hollie Ryder, and Nestor Raul Anzola decided to forget about running the marathon and stayed in the local area during the weekend (maybe next year the Massachussett people will have the opportunity and pleasure of looking at us running there! ).  We lined up in downtown Prentiss among 149 other runners and walkers who braved the threat of heavy rain looming in the early hours.  The bad weather never materialized during the 5K (It rained hard once we were done!), and the participants and on-lookers enjoyed the course, which led the runners around the downtown area, finishing in front of Regions Bank.  Eighty-one people completed the 1-mile fun run course later under wet conditions.

The race was won by Rob Oates with a time of 17:23. The first female finisher was Yolanda Brown, who completed the race in 20:21.  David Smiley easily won the race walk by beating the second finisher by over four minutes.  Tina Branan was the winner in the women’s category with a time of 30:50.  While the top runners and walkers were awarded with fantastic cash prizes and huge trophies, there were over 15 random winners who received nice door prizes and gift certificates.

The participants from the Pine Belt Area posted very good performances.  Jeff Hathorn was second overall and won the Masters division in the 5K Run (17:52).  John Oliveri was third overall in 18:41 and placed first in his age group.  Becky Ryder, Sonny and Jesse Jarrell won their age brackets.  Steve Ulery was second in his.  After a six month absence, I competed again in a walking event.  I placed third overall in 31:59, got the Masters title, a nice trophy, and some money prize.  Hollie Ryder and Joey Jarrell also had a good race; however, they were in the toughest and fastest age groups.

Some added comments by Steve Ulery:
John Oliveri came in third overall in 18:41.  He continues to get faster.
Nestor walked to get a trophy that was almost as big as him and a $50 cash award.
Jeff Hathorn was second overall and won the Master's trophy.
Becky Ryder ran 9 minute miles based on training runs at 11 minutes, thus she was happy to be back running.
Thank you,
Steve

1 - 3 generations of Jarrells - Sonny, Joey and Jesse all ran.
2 - The start.  With bad weather forecast, this was the smallest group in years. 75 runners.
3 - The walkers started a minute later.  Our own Nestor Raul Anzola won Masters amid the 74 walkers.
4 - An old guy happy to finish.  With 84% humidity it was a tough day out there.
