The 2007 State Games of
Mississippi 5K road race was held on Saturday, June 16 at
Bonita Lakes in Meridian with a good group of runners and
walkers. The weather was hot and the humidity was near 100%,
so it was typical Mississippi summer race weather. After a
few instructions from race director, Scott Crenshaw, we were
off and running. Mark Elliot from Meridian was the overall
winner with a time of 17.25. Sarah Hamms was the first
female finisher with a very fast 18.21. James Johnson was
the Masters winner with a fast 18.21. The female Masters,
Lori Ladd, came in at 22.22. Phillip Wedgeworth was the
Grand Masters winner with a 20.34, and Lillian Zamora was
the female Grand Masters winner with a 32.12. One of my
favorite running friends, Jerry Parker (75 years young), was
the Senior Masters winner. The Pine Belt Area was also
represented by Justin Bynam who ran a blazing19.50. Fellow
Pine Belt Pacer Martha Ray Sartor registered for the race,
but failed to show up. She probably had pressing business in
Starkville. After the race we had very good food consisting
of pizza, fruit, Little Debbie snacks, and plenty of water
