July 4, 2007

The 2007 Watermelon Classic was held on July 4, in Jackson with over 1000 people participating in the 5K Run/Walk and the one-mile run. We all had to get up a little earlier for the 7:30 start, but in my opinion that is the latest any race should start in the summer. This year we had overcast skies, but the humidity made up for the lack of sun. We all gathered on Lakeland Drive and waited for the race director, MTC's Jack Ward, to give us the instructions and to fire the starting gun.  This was a very fast field with the top nine finishers coming in under 18:00 and the top two under 17:00 and only four seconds apart. Tyler Kirk, who was second last week to Miles Martin, turned the tables this week and beat Martin by four seconds at 16:46 to Martin's 16:50. Mark Thorne was third with a 17:09. Mark Elliot, who has been working hard to lower his time, finished with the Masters and sixth overall with a 17:34. Heather Butler was the first female with a fast time of 18:50. Marion Geissinger took Masters honors for the females. Buddy Pierce and Donna Lee Andrews were the Grand Masters Winners. David Smalley and Viola Dacus were the top male and female race walkers. Nester Anzola, who dressed as Uncle Sam, and Carolyn Graham, who dressed as Minnie Mouse, were the Masters winners in the race walk. Ed Brashier and Emily Lee took Grand Masters honors. This is a great race and seems to be somewhat of a family affair. Rob and Reuben Oates ran. Nancy and Jerry Dykes showed up as usual. The Prevost family was in attendance. The Bynum family drove up from Laurel to cheer on Justin. Jeff Hathorne had his son and grandson. Nestor brought his family. I brought my family, and Antha brought her favorite family member. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented. Nestor Anzola won the best costume for the second year in a row, and he was also the Masters winner in the walk. Phillip Wedgeworth won his age group. After the race we enjoyed plenty of Watermelon, soft drinks, bananas, and water. This is a great event and one of the biggest races in the state. Much thanks to everyone who works so hard to put on quality races such as this one. © Phillip Wedgeworth Results are linked.
