The first ever Jones Junior
College Bobcat 5K run/walk was held on Saturday, September 8
with about 200 people participating in the 5K run/walk and
one-mile fun run. After a few instructions from race
director, Caroline Kelly, Chief Wayne Pilgrim shot the
starting gun; and 150 people were off and running or
walking. The course had a few hills and many long straight
aways, which made for some fast times. This race had several
people who traveled from long distances to get here. Tony
Rigdon from Missouri was the overall winner with a time of
18.54, but Justin Bynum was a very close second at 18.58.
Bryan Lagg and Teresa Cruthers were the Masters winners.
Phillip Wedgeworth and Carolyn Ward, who came from Oracle,
Arizona for the race, were the Grand Masters winners. Larry
Sykes, Curtis Fancher, and Richard Sims were the first
walkers. The first female walkers were Angela Clayton and
Sandra Shows. After the race we enjoyed fruit, cookies, soft
drinks, Power-Aide, and plenty of water. This was a very
well organized and well run (pun) race. Thanks to all of the
Jones people who worked so hard to make this race a success.
Put this race down as a "must do" next year. The only
complaint was about the heat, but we have no control over
that. See Awards and
Results. Before I could finish this
report, I was getting emails about the race such as this
one:
"I do have to say that
you guys put on a great race today. First of all, the
trophies were really nice. Secondly, the post-race food
was good and last, but not least, was having plenty of
tables and chairs under tents to enjoy your fruit,
cookies and other items out of reach of the scorching
sun. I'm sure all the runners greatly appreciated the
extra effort of the staff to make the post-race
activities as comfortable as possible.
Congratulations to all
for a job well done!!!!!"
