The sixteenth annual Diamondhead 5K
run/walk was held on Saturday, August 18 with nearly 200
people in the 5K. It was the usual hot, humid day for
this race. The course is an out and back with more hills
than most Coast races. After a few instructions from
race director, Leonard Vergunst, Andy McLean took the
early lead and ran away from everybody else with anyone
seriously close. McLean's winning time was 16.53.
Leonard came in second with a very fast 17.28 to take
the Masters Award. Margot Hair was the first female
finisher with a 19.28. Kristen Vergunst was the female
Masters winner. David Jeffrey and Nancy Phillips were
the Grand Masters winners. Phillip Wedgeworth
represented the Pine Belt Pacers by winning his age
group. After the race we had plenty of good food, soft
drinks, and beer. This was my first Gulf Coast run in a
long time, and it is always very nice to enjoy the
friendly people, the accurate courses, the efficiently
run races, and the prompt results and awards. Thanks to
Leonard, Denise, Terry, and all of the others who work
so hard to make the coast races successful. Complete
