in memory of Johnny Bradley
Slow Poke   5K

The second annual Slow Poke 5K in memory of Johnny Bradley was held on a very hot Saturday, August 4, in Philadelphia, Mississippi. When I drove up to the race site, Peggy said, "We must be 'real' early because no one is here." But we were not early. This was possibly the smallest crowd that I have ever seen at a Mississippi Track Club event. The weather was extremely hot and humid even though we started at 7:30 a.m. Jack Ward gave us some instructions and told us that the course had been changed since last year. Last year's course was mostly flat and fast, but this year we had nothing but hills and more hills. When we started, one young man quickly took the lead; however, after about a quarter mile, he was bent over losing his breakfast. At that point the race turned into a two-man contest between Mike Thrailkill and Mark Elliot with Thrailkill winning by a few seconds. Angel Overstreet is continuing to get faster in her comeback, and she won the female category. The Pine Belt Pacers were represented by Larry Sykes, who won the walk; Dutch Van Fleet; and Phillip Wedgeworth, who won his age group.  After the race we had good food and drink. Several people also won very nice door prizes.
