The 10 Year Anniversary Carl Touchstone Mississippi Trail 50 (MS50 for short) was held March 12, 2005 on the Longleaf Horse Trail at the De Soto National Forest. We had an all time record crowd , with 205 runners signed up to participate, up over 33% from 2004. The weather cooperated the week of the race for once, with no appreciable rain all week. Race day was ideal at the start, 47° and clear. The sun was already coming up due to the one week later race date.  This resulted in a course which was almost dry (except in a few low spots which we wont get into here) and very fast. As a result new course records were set in the 20K and 50K, despite being a slightly harder course than the pre-2003 course.

The temperature was in the high 40's at the start, and stayed comfortable throughout mid morning, then climbed to the mid 70°'s, probably precluding a course record in the 50 miler, and causing some folks to have heat related problems, but nothing too serious.

Well supplied aid stations were positioned every two to four miles with easy crew access, so no one had to worry about dehydration or lack of calories. Trophies were awarded to the top 3 males and females in each event, and finisher mementos of race caps were awarded to each finisher. The 50 milers also got a handsome belt buckle. Burger, dogs, beans and macaroni were prepared on-site, so everyone had a hot meal  to help everyone recover from their exertions.

The runs were sponsored by the South Central Regional Medical Center, Touchstone Dental Care of Hattiesburg, Touchstone Architecture & Consulting, P.A., Brooke Touchstone, Wanda and Justin Touchstone, Susan and Bill McMullan, Ramada Inn of Laurel, Horne CPA Group, Patagonia, Trail Runner Magazine, RoadID, e-Caps, Fleet Feet of Jackson, and Buffalo Peak outfitters of Jackson.  These sponsors make the race possible. Many thanks to them for all they do to promote healthy life styles and recreational events in south Mississippi.

This event draws quite a few people to Laurel for the two days. 205 runners came from 24 states, Canada, and England to run in the MS50 this year. Most of them brought at least one spectator along to cheer and/or crew for them. The US runner who came the furthest was from California. Several were from WI, CT, MN, PA and other cold weather states, looking for a change in weather. 24 runners were over 60, and 2 were over 70.

5 persons who attended have run in the MS50 all 10 years, and were presented with special 10 year award trophies at the pre-race supper. (see more statistics and records).

Congratulations to Race Director Dennis Bisnette, Steve DeReamer, Marsha DeReamer, Susan Brosette, David Dill, Steve Burgess, Renee Bisnette,  Bill McMullan, Randy Saxon, Jeff Troyka, Wyck Neely, Brenda Wade, and to all the many course and aid station workers for putting on another fine Carl Touchstone Memorial Mississippi 50 Trail Run.

As usual, Running Bear was never caught doing anything very useful on race day. But if anyone spots errors in the write-up or results, it's his fault. Please let us know and we will sober him up long enough to have them corrected.

Read a poem written by, and illustrating the unforgettable spirit of Laurel's Carl Touchstone, and of many persons who participate in running and life.
