On Saturday, March 27, several Pine Belt Pacers traveled to
Mobile for
the twenty-seventh Azalea Trail Run. Steve Ulery, Martha Rae Sartor,
Burch Davis, Bob Clark, Ed Wheeler, Richard Sims, Robin Ryder, Becky
Ryder, Jim Cole, Jerry Worley running as Ray Martin, and Phillip
Wedgeworth represented the club well. Additionally many other
Mississippians helped represent our state well. Leonard Vergunst won his
age group and Jim George was second. Robin, Ed, Jim, and Jerry all
placed in their age groups. The course was flat and fast for everyone
except those of us who couldn't handle the very hot and humid
conditions. The Kenyans didn't seem to have a problem with the heat.
Everyone enjoyed the after-race refreshments. The beer seemed to be the
favorite of most. This is a great race, which allows us mere mortals to
run with great runners from all over the world. Or maybe I should say
allows us to run far behind great runners from all over the world.
