Trek the Trace 2 Mile Run - Week 1
Twenty five runners and walkers braved the heat (93ºF but felt
like 102ºF) and humidity (300%) Tuesday evening to participate in the
first in a series of four predicted time 2-mile runs Tuesday, August 7,
at the Longleaf Trace. In addition, ten kids ran the first half-mile
race of the series before the oldies event. Runners and walkers called
their shots, removed their watches, and trekked one mile out and back
from the Southern Miss Gateway Pavilion.
It was a very close race. The top 10 participants were only 20
seconds or less off their predications. Keith Barrett and Nestor Raul
Anzola almost nailed their predictions. Both of them were only one
second off of their predicted time. To decide who would be the winner
of the grand prize of a pair of shoes, courtesy of Soccer Locker & City
Runners, they predicted their time in a tie-breaker half-mile run.
Keith was completely off since he predicted 3:30 and ran the distance in
3:00! However, Nestor Raul did it worst! He predicted 3:28 and
finished in 2:52. At the end of the day, Keith Barrett was declared the
overall winner. Becky the Boss Ryder was very sad and disappointed
since she was praying for a Nestor Raul's victory! If he won, he
would finally wear some kind of good-looking fancy brand shoes, not
those ugly but comfortable and really fast Vitruvian shoes.
A rookie in the Pine Belt Pacers Club, Jennifer Blair, topped
the women field racing home just three seconds over her predicted
time. Jennifer edged Donna Happy Sumrall, who was eleven seconds off
her predicted mark. A total of 21 out of 25 participants were club
members. Of course, after the race everyone enjoyed the food, a lot of
sweet stuff, and beverages.
Thank you so much to all who participated and
to all who assisted with the Predicted Time run. Kudos to Audrey
Jackson, Sheryl Chatfield, Hollie and Becky Ryder for a well organized
event and to Donna Sumrall for her continuous work with the children and
for giving so much motivation to the kids during their race. Of course,
thanks also to Mustafa Khannouchi for always supporting the activities
of the club. See you at the Trace next week!! © Pijume Diwesi
